Awnings from Awnings Direct
We stock hundreds of different awnings for caravans, motorhomes and campervans. The awnings we sell are carefully selected from trusted brands we have worked with for years including Isabella, Dorema, Sunncamp, Dometic, Kampa, Telta, Vango, Outdoor Revolution, Quest Leisure, Camptech, Outwell and more ….
Each manufacturer of awnings tends to offer something a little different whether it be alternative colours, sizes or shapes. Often there are common themes between manufacturers but it is hard to find two identical awnings from two different suppliers. This is why we offer as much choice as possible so you can get the correct awning for your caravan, motorhome or campervan.
It is very important to select an awning that can fit your caravan, motorhome or campervan. Just because you like the size shape or colour doesn’t mean it is necessarily compatible.
With a caravan it is quite simple as all caravan tend to be the same height (but not all!) This means that the big choice is whether you want a Full Awning or a Porch Awning. The difference isn’t always obvious as a porch awning can be huge.
Full Awnings
These cover the entire side of the caravan. A full awning attaches to the caravan using the entire awning channel of the awning rail on the side of the caravan. It is fed in from one side and then threaded through the channel until it reaches the ground on the other side. The method used to describe the size of a full awning is the ground to ground measurement in centimetres as seen in our awning size guide . There are also different depths of awnings normally mentioned in the name such as D250 vs D300 meaning 250cm or 300cm deep.
Different manufacturers handle sizing in subtly different ways so it is important to know the correct size and then work out what actual size awning you need. All full awnings have a range of sizes (from – to) normally (but not always) increasing in increments of 25cm. With some manufacturers such as Dorema an awning will state a size range such as 1000-1025cm. This means if your actual size is 1019cm then that would be the correct one for you. Other manufacturers such as Isabella work slightly differently. They specify a size eg 1025cm which actually fits the range 1011 – 1035cm. So your actual size could be 1019cm but you buy a 1025cm one as that is the best fit.
The real challenge is where you have a size such as 1025cm exactly. With an Isabella awning you would order a 1025cm awning. With others such as Dorema then technically a 1000-1025 would fit, as would a 1025-1050cm. We always advise to go for the 1025-1050cm in this case in case of setting up on uneven ground to make sure you don’t fall short. Full awnings are not an exact science and it is important to pitch them correctly. For any advice on full caravan awnings please get in touch, or come and see us at our premises on Sandy Lane. We have a good display of awnings on display.
Porch Awnings
Porch awnings may sound small, but this is not necessarily the case. The restricting factor is that the main part of the awning sits contained within the flat part of the awning channel of the caravan. See our Awning Size Guide for details.
Porch awnings would ideally not go down over a window or access door or locker but they can if required. Blocking your main entrance door is obviously a no no! A lot of porch awnings can also add annexes or extensions to one or both sides of the awning. As these awning extensions or annexes do not connect to the awning rail, it is possible to make the overall awning size quite large, without requiring the flat part of the awning rail to be as long as the entire width of your outfit. This is also a particularly handy way of keeping a large awning if you tend to change your caravan often. Full awnings are caravan specific , but a porch is much more flexible.
Smaller caravan porch awnings are also available from as little as 180cm wide. These are ideal for weekend use when you may just want a bit of shelter for outdoor shoes and other bits and pieces.
Why would you want an awning for your caravan, motorhome or campervan ?
Adding an awning to a caravan can effectively double the living space you have. This allows you to set up furniture inside to shelter from excess sunshine or showers. It also allows storage of items such as bicycles. Cooking in an awning is also very popular, however you shouldn’t use a gas appliance to cook in an awning.
Most larger awnings can also provide extra space for people to sleep if required. There really are endless possibilities when adding an awning to your leisure vehicle. In the case of drive-away motorhome and campervan awnings they are also sometimes used to keep your pitch reserved and store items you don’t need to carry around with you when popping out for the day.
